THE TRUTH

A friend of mine sent me this video.  As painful as it is to hear, it's true.  The "NEA" statement at the beginning refers to the National Education Association.  That's the union I'm compelled to belong to because my state isn't a right to work state.  I refused to join the union but I still must pay dues.  That I'm compelled by the government to pay dues to a union that I feel does not represent my best interests is the essence of tyranny.

The actor in the video is Jeff Daniels.  He's played many parts including George Washington in a movie called "The Crossing" about the crossing of the Delaware in preparation for the attack on Trenton in 1776.  It's one of my favorite movies.

Please listen and I'm interested in hearing comments about the statements in the video.

Honestly, I don't know what to say.
I saw that about 8 months ago or so...I hated him for what he said.
Is he right? Maybe.
Do I smile right now because nobody broke into cheers when he attacked the young girl? They booed him and I'm thrilled about that. Maybe some kids still DO believe this country's the greatest.
Who knew they did?
I'm pleased.

To use language like he did to students and to be so condemnatory toward us is bad.
I'm torn; he's right about a lot, but ...now I'm rambling because I don't know for sure how I feel about his harangue.

what about you, L&O?

By the way, I honestly didn't know before 3 days ago that Los Angeles Unified teachers have to pay $56 a month for being a member of the teacher's union. Yes, and those who don't want to belong have to pay $50 anyway. Regardless. What the heck? "You don't need to be in the club but you have to pay dues?" And that's LEGAL?

So, a teacher told me she joined and pays the extra $6 because , what the heck...she gets some good things out of it. But she hates the union.
THIS is why there are so many members; not the baloney that most people like unions!

Z,
I think he makes the comments in the manner he does for the effect it has on the listeners. It obviously got your attention. I think he's trying to make a point and the end is what he wants America to be. In essence what it used to be. Someone has to call out the oblivious masses who live with their head in the sand thinking America is what they think it is. Meanwhile, we sink further each day.

Yes it's legal if your state isn't right to work. I don't have anything against unions. I was the president of the police union for 5 years. I'm against this union because it's a political action committee that is only interested in maintaining its place at the power table. They don't advocate for teachers.
Thanks for the visit.

Every year, my students enter the Voice of Democracy, one of the VFW's essay contests. This year, the prompt is as follows: “Why I'm Optimistic About our Nation’s Future.”

When I showed this prompt to one of my students yesterday, he said, "But what if I'm not optimistic about America's future?"

Other students betrayed similar feelings by the expressions on their faces.

I suggested that they study the days of John Adams vs. Thomas Jefferson and the time before the Civil War -- for starters.

Now, my students -- homeschoolers -- are strong patriots. But they are also conservatives and very aware of the decline of our nation.

Tell you what Law Teacher. When the union is not FORCED to defend you and negotiate for you even though you don't pay union dues in right to scab states, then your outrage will be taken seriously.

That is the fact my friend. You get a great contract, job security and retirement benefits non union labor does not. Your employer must have good reason to dismiss or discipline you.

When you add up your wages and benefits compared to nonunion you are way ahead. Well worth the dues you pay.

And this is in keeping with my new found republicanism. Jack Welch, former ceo of GE had a contract. As do all the others, D or R. We are Americans. The GOP had a Contract with America. So should labor be entitled and should have a contract with management.

AOW,
Thanks for the visit. Unfortunately, a lot of teachers are left wingers who buy into Obama's crap. Too bad because students form a lot of their opinions early and oftentimes from unscrupulous teachers who indoctrinate them. Disgusting but true.

Truth,
Thanks for the visit. I've never been against unions. I've been in one since 1975. My point has always been that unions in today's iteration are no longer worker's advocates, they are power players and political advocacy groups.

I think they've sold their souls. When I was a union president, I steadfastly refused to endorse candidates. And believe me, every candidate wants a police endorsement. Instead, endorsing a candidate or party obligates unions to support issues it's members don't support or benefit from. Hence, unions are bailing out on Obamacare.

Everything should be subject to negotiation. A mutually agreeable solution is possible. You seem to think that businesses are going to screw their employees given the chance. That's self-defeating for them. Negotiation works. Thug tactics, not so much.

As a matter of fact, unions kill themselves with their appeal to non-union citizens as victims. They aren't because as you said, we have nice contracts.

Glad someone's stating the obvious. Terrific clip.

If this country is ever going to progress it is critical that we deconstruct the myths that have been constructed around our so called "freedoms". Start with the purpose and effectiveness of the miltary.

Unions are no longer workers advocates. Well, it as been a long time since workers advocates have existed in America but we're a long way from being garment workers in Bangladesh, right? Not that the folks in the Libertarian sandbox aren't going to facilitate a slide in living standards.

Ducky,
Thanks for the visit. As for unions, I agree that they have ceased to serve a purpose other than clinging to their power using the extorted money of union employees.

Liberals like this guy need to be rounded up and sent to China.

Re-writing of History and forcing homosexuality and all numbers of perversions down people's throats is a favorite pass time of these wimps.

Don't fall for their agenda.

It leads to damnation.

A Union Rep is a thug first and foremost.

Almost no one ever gave without someone hammering them (my apologies to the real men in our country's history that did the right thing without coercion).

During my tenure as a Rep I gave away many trunk rides to those men that needed a place to gather their thoughts and come to the conclusion resistance to our demands was futile.

To this day Widows, Orphans, women, and children in and out of the Union benefit from the programs established in the name of Our Lord through my office.

I worked for the membership; their enemies were mine as well.

There was no tolerance for slug Business Managers and Agents.

The Local I belong to is flourishing in a Right to Work State.

Our Manager is a Thug Par Excellence.

America was built with blood, sweat, tears, and muscle.

God bless America.
