My wife and I are going to see "True Grit." I don't go to the movies very much for two reasons. One, it's as expensive as hell and two, I haven't seen many that stack up to the movies I've watched from years ago, Gran Torino being a notable exception. I watched the original True Grit the other night. I love the movie and the performances by John Wayne, Kim Darby, Glen Campbell, Robert Duvall, and a cameo by Dennis Hopper will be hard to top. This was an Oscar winning movie (John Wayne). We'll see if the remake stacks up.

I watched the remake the other day and liked it. You can never top John Wayne in my opinion, but Jeff Bridges did a respectable job. The new movie follows the book more closely.

When I heard that someone planned to remake True Grit I thought that they'd botch the job - but they didn't. It was not the same movie - yet the same because it was based on the same book. So in a way it did a homage to the original.

L&OT: I absolutely LOVE True Grit and John Wayne! Rooster, Maddie AND Little Blackie all have GRIT! Since I’m not a fan of Jeff Bridges, or remakes for that matter (seem to fall short of the originals for the most part) I’ll wait to hear the reviews and probably watch it on DVD.

LL: I wasn't aware there was a book. I'll have to see if I can get a copy!

Happy New Year!!

It's an interesting marker in the Coen Bros. development. They have always enjoyed torturing their characters and went completely over the top with "No Country for Old Men". They seem to have recovered.

Bridges is not nearly as "cinematic" as Wayne in this version but something more important is taking place. It's not a film about heroism, heck good or bad, you can find heroism in a lot of folks. No, it shifts to a critique on fate, grace or whatever you might call it.

That is much more in tune with the book (excellent) and the Coens seem to have taken a look at Robert Bresson with this one and ditched the action film nonsense.

I'll watch it and make my pick. But I'll probably be like the cranky old guys on the muppets. Thanks for the visit.

I'm going to read the book. I'm intrigued by the stilted language of the movie, which I assume comes from the book. I agree about Wayne, but I'm not sophisticated to make a comparison of other movies by the Coens, but I agree that Rooster is both hero and antihero in this movie. You root for him not because you admire him, but because you want the right thing to happen and he's the only that can bring it about.

Thanks for the visit. I've read a lot of fiction and this is a classic case.

Hallo Law&Order Teacher,
I found your blog by chance, and was attracted by the picture of "veterans of foreign wars". (Because I dreamed of soldiers in a rare, almost awaked dream and very positive, though I was critical in former.) Please excuse my poor English, because I´m german. I´m christian (lutheran, with much respect to catholics) and wish you much power and god´s blessings and strength for life. I have much respect to soldiers, police agents and other "protectors" and hope you can serve people in this (or another) manner still now, and that you are well.
