Well tomorrow we have our "mock crash." For anyone who doesn't know what that is, it's a fake crash that is done around prom time to make the students think about risky behavior. I always hope that it affects the students in a positive way to not engage in risky behaviors. We all know that there are a number of students who will engage in these behaviors regardless of our efforts because they are invincible. I only wish it was true.
We also do something called "every 15 minutes" that is designed to bring home the fact to the students that someone dies in the US from an alcohol-related car crash every 15 minutes. I know in some cases we are wasting our time. But I think that most kids listen to adults that they recognize have their best interests at heart. In this activity someone dressed as the Grim Reaper and a police officer visit students in predetermined classrooms to pick them out. The students are "declared dead" and their obituary is read. For the remainder of the day they are silent. We received a lot of positive feedback last year from the students about this activity which prompted us to repeat it. We do this program in our school. I find it does make an impact with some of the teenagers I teach.
I agree with "californiateacherguy." If you save one student's life, it is worth it.
It certainly got a positive response from the students. Our membership in Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD)is sure to increase. I hope that bodes well for them making good decisions. Thanks for your posts.
